These days, missing work because of sickness, pain, or injury is something everyone wants to avoid. In the long run, it’s cost-effective to invest money in staying well. Just as changing your car’s oil filter is an easy way to keep your car running smoothly, bodywork can be a rejuvenative pit stop for your whole body’s well-being. It’s worth considering, right along with eating healthy food, exercising, and getting adequate sleep.
To those of you who see me regularly, thank you. I am so happy that my work is helpful to you. To those of you who may be hesitant for financial reasons, I understand. Know that even one session a month can have great benefits. A 30 minute massage, at $40 to $55, is effective for many of my regular clients.
The bottom line is, I want you to be healthy and happy, because happy clients will spread the word that bodywork is efficient and enjoyable health care. That would be good for me and you, but also good for our greater culture and community.
Recently, I interviewed two of my clients who regularly book 30 minute sessions, to hear their thoughts on the benefits of shorter (and more affordable) sessions.
interview with Jenn Gruslin, doula:
Jen Raimondi: How long have you been coming for massage?
Jenn Gruslin: I have been coming to you for massage for almost two years.
JR: Initially, why did you opt for 30-minute sessions?
JG: I have a lot of scar tissue resulting from surgeries to treat Chronic Compartment Syndrome. Several times a week, I would awake in the middle of the night with horrible leg cramps. Long periods of standing would cause numbness and pain in my legs. I started seeing Jen occasionally as I could afford to do so, but couldn't really afford more than once every 2 months. After each treatment, I was seeing results and expressed that I wished that I could afford to come more often. Jen suggested that instead of widely spaced 60 minute sessions that, perhaps, more frequent 30 minute sessions that focused on the most acutely affected areas would be helpful. Now, I see Jen for 30 minutes every 3 weeks and it has truly changed my life.
JR: Have you found that the shorter sessions are effective therapeutically? How so?
JG: I have not had leg cramps in over a year and can now sleep throughout the night EVERY NIGHT. The pain and numbness I used to experience after long periods of standing have greatly diminished.
JR: Do you plan on continuing the same frequency of 30-minute sessions in the near future, and why?
JG: In these tough economic times, it is tempting to give up what one might consider to be "decadent spending", but if you consider what even a 30-minute massage can do for your physical pain, imagine what it will do for your stress level as well!

interview with Paul E. Bettencourt, singer-songwriter:
Jen Raimondi: How long have you been coming for massage?
Paul E. Bettencourt: I've been coming to you for a little over a year, for deep tissue massage.
JR: How often?
PB: It's been a practical and affordable 30 minute session, every second week. (I'm self-employed, and collecting minimal disability benefits, hence the sporadic schedule; I would recommend weekly or even twice a week for most people).
JR: Have you found that the shorter sessions are effective therapeutically? How so?
PB: I believe that the 30-minute sessions are effective largely to the skill and empathy of the masseuse. I feel that familiarity with a client, over time, creates greater trust, comfort, and effectiveness with the short format. This is not a "quick fix" therapy; like yoga or meditation, good massage "settles in" over time. I can honestly say that these sessions have become a virtual necessity for me; a Blessed Relief from the wear and tear of life challenges.
And you've got to love the folks who do this! They really are a special breed!
